The project, delivered by VAUGHANDALE CONSTRUCTION LIMITED, included a brand-new slate roof, upgraded flat roofing, improved insulation, nearly 200 new double-glazed aluminium window frames, and a redesigned café roof with skylights – creating a space that’s comfortable to use all-year round.
Gavin Peake, director of IT, estates and learning resources, said: “This work was essential, as the tiled roof – installed around 100 years ago – had reached the end of its lifespan. Maintenance had become impossible, as the original tiles were too brittle to be repaired, making leaks increasingly difficult to fix. The flat roof spaces across the site were similarly life-expired.
“Vaughandale provided an exemplary service throughout, and we would welcome the opportunity to work with them again on future projects.”
The work was meticulously carried out to main the architectural heritage of the building, which opened as Mansfield Technical College – a forerunner to the college we know today – in 1928.
Its sandstone frontage was also cleaned, revealing a long-hidden engraving of Nottinghamshire County Council’s historic unofficial emblem, featuring symbols of the county’s heritage including Sherwood Forest, coal mining, agriculture and the famous lace-making industry.
Joanna Wilson, head of sixth form, said: “The new windows and roof have created a lovely building for our students to study, enhanced by the insulated roof over the Gallery Café area where the comfortable temperature, whatever the weather outside, means this is a place where students are able to comfortably work, relax and socialise all year round.”
Mark Ross, contracts manager at Vaughandale Construction, said: “We are proud that all the work was undertaken whilst students continued with their studies on site. Completion of this scheme means 750 students and over 50 staff each year will benefit from the building being modernised to improve learning and social facilities.”
