University of Nottingham Large Animal Teaching Facility (LATF)
Timeframe: 34 Weeks
Project Value: £1,100,000
Client: University of Nottingham
Creating a State-of-the-Art Veterinary Facility.
Vaughandale Construction were delighted to partner with the University of Nottingham to deliver the new LATF, designed to expand the teaching capabilities of the Sutton Bonington Campus.
The project involved the design and build of a barn extension that blends seamlessly with the existing Equine Arena, creating a unified and functional space.
This cutting-edge facility includes group study rooms, exam teaching spaces, and areas for farm skills and equine work-up, providing a vital resource for veterinary students to enhance their practical education. The barn stands as a testament to Vaughandale’s expertise in balancing the needs of modern educational facilities with sensitive integration into a rural environment.
Overcoming Challenges on a Live University Campus.
One of the most complex aspects of the build involved the redesign of the underground drainage and attenuation systems. Working closely with ecological experts, Vaughandale designed and installed surface water drainage system that discharges into an adjacent reed bed and feeds the surrounding watercourses. This solution not only complied with water authority and environmental regulations, it provided a sustainable drainage system in harmony with the surrounding landscape and ensured that the existing habitat was protected and enriched.
The mechanical and electrical installation was another key focus, requiring the integration of a Building Management System (BMS) that seamlessly connects with the University’s centralised control systems. This advanced system ensures efficient energy use and optimises the facility’s operations for long-term sustainability.
Delivering this project within a live university environment required precision, collaboration, and careful planning. From managing the logistics of a busy campus to navigating significant design changes during construction, our team rose to the challenge to deliver a facility we’re incredibly proud of.”

Prioritising Environmental Responsibility.
- Sustainable underground drainage and attenuation systems, designed in compliance with the Ecology Report and utilising natural reed beds.
- Masonry walls, complemented by vertical timber cladding and weatherboarding, to ensure a durable and visually appealing structure that aligns with the rural setting.
- Installation of new mains supplies and building services, controlled by an energy-efficient BMS system, ensuring seamless operation and optimised energy use.
The classroom teaching space is carbon neutral. The rooms achieve a ‘U’ value for thermal insulation that exceeds current building regulations. Air source heat pumps have been utilised to provide heating and supply hot water.
These measures demonstrate Vaughandale’s commitment to creating sustainable and functional buildings that meet the highest environmental standards.
A Commitment to Excellence.
The completion of the LATF showcases Vaughandale Construction’s ability to deliver bespoke educational facilities that meet the needs of both clients and students.
